Level I Certification EmPOWER course

Two Level I Certification courses will be offered, beginning in July and continuing through the school year.  Enrollment is open to general education teachers in all grades that teach expository writing.

NOTE: Special education teachers and literacy specialists who do not have primary teaching positions within a classroom (i.e., are not fully in charge of developing day-to-day curriculum) must enroll with a general education teammate with whom they co-teach on a regular basis OR must currently co-teach with a general educator who has successfully completed a full EmPOWER course. Our intention is not to be exclusive of professionals who wish to be trained; rather it is to shape instructional practice within the setting that most frequently demands writing:  the classroom.  In addition, we aim to support collaboration between general and special educators so that the same instructional methods can be used across disciplines, thereby supporting students to transfer skills across settings.  Most importantly, our research and experience shows that instruction situated in the classroom has the greatest effect on improving student performance in writing.

FEEDBACK FROM PARTICIPANTS...

“Dr. Singer is a dynamic, knowledgeable, and well prepared speaker.  This is one of the best workshops I have ever attended.  The information presented can be used immediately.”

“The model of writing instruction presented can help ALL children, not just those with special needs.”

“The strategies given were so powerful that I am in awe.  Thank you so much for giving me an interesting and effective way to teach something I have always found difficult.  I can’t wait to begin.”

“Your assessment tools are surgical.  They allow me to see exactly what’s broken so I can leave what isn’t alone.  There’s no need to amputate the arm when all that’s broken is the elbow.”
